Meet Megan Barbee Banker
Storytelling is the heart of excellent content and marketing strategy. Sounds simple enough, yet many struggle to get past “Once upon a time…” when it comes to hyping their own goods. I remember a similar feeling of defeat as a newly minted English Language Arts teacher attempting to convince hordes of social media-addicted teenagers why [insert canonical required reading here] was worth their time. Perhaps you’ve made the same mistake I did in attempting to connect with an audience – thinking it was about you, your team, and your product/service.
I had not paused to think, “How do these stories resonate with their lives? How can this story serve as a catalyst to empower my students to solve the problems they’re facing in their own lives?” I had confused the product—curriculum—for the main character, which should have been my audience, the students. I quickly adjusted to a relationship-based approach and was named Teacher of the Year in my first year of eligibility.
I bring the same people-focused mindset to content and marketing strategy for my clients. In our story, the target customers are the heroes and the product or service is the proverbial magic lamp, pair of ruby red slippers, or skeleton key critical to unlocking their greatest potential.
Throughout my experiences as a high school English instructor, summer camp director, and freelance content and marketing coordinator, I’ve relied upon the same foolproof strategy: ask the right questions, seek to understand, and actually listen. While curiosity is one of my defining attributes, I am best suited to work with small businesses and nonprofit organizations that pride themselves on embodying a collaborative approach, having an open mind to new ideas and technologies, leveling the playing field via innovative products or services, and promoting lifelong learning, wellness, and altruism.
